A laminar flow bell is a laboratory equipment used to obtain a pollution-free environment, as it provides a sterile and safe area within the laboratory, and any activity that is required safely can be carried out there.
In the case of horizontal laminar flow bells, they are those in which the HEPA filter is located at the back of the cab, so the unidirectional airflow moves through horizontal parallel lines, i.e. from the back of the equipment to the operator.
What is its application in the laboratory?
Horizontal laminar flow bells are workstations with a built-in air filtration system used for a variety of applications. They provide the work area with a smooth air flow with laminar flow and class 100 conditions. They represent a particle-free work area that will protect the sample from any pollutants in the environment.
It is important to note that these equipment are intended to specifically protect the sample and not the user, and should never be used with pathogens or with volatile or toxic chemicals. The equipment usually has a large work area, with side glass walls, illuminated by a fluorescent lamp. A germicidal UV lamp allows sterilizing the area before and after work.
How do laminar flow bells work?
When all the air entering the work area is filtered through the HEPA filters, a unidirectional flow occurs because the air moves through the work area with a uniform speed along parallel lines achieving a sweep or removal of the particles present in it. Air filtration is obtained by means of a built-in HEPA filter, which filters 99.97% of particles greater than or equal to 0.3 micrometers.
This type of equipment cannot be used to work with dangerous products, e.g. certain antibiotics and chemotherapy, or any type of pathogenic sample such as virus, since during handling aerosols can be generated that the airflow will carry to the operator. The horizontal laminar flow bell can be used for the preparation of culture media.
Why is it recommended to use a horizontal laminar flow bell?
The use of horizontal laminar flux bells is recommended for the protection of samples or product. This prevents cross-contamination that could result in loss of samples or products and, as a result, loss of time and economic resources for a new test. It is not recommended for the handling of cytostatics or for the preparation of oncological medicinal products because they can cause poisoning and damage to the airways. It should not be used in pathogenic samples such as tuberculosis or for inactivation of Sars-cov-2 (coronavirus samples).
